The Great star Elle Fanning has spoken out for the first time since the show's cancellation.

In late August, Hulu confirmed that the historical comedy-drama had been cancelled after three seasons.

The actress, who plays lead character Catherine the Great, paid tribute to the show and her role in a lengthy Instagram post with various behind-the-scenes images.

"Scrolling down memory lane… I haven't been able to properly share my thoughts after the news of The Great's cancellation," she began in her post caption.

"This show has meant the world to me. The experiences shared. The memories I'll never forget."

Fanning hailed The Great's screenwriter and producer Tony McNamara as "a certified genius", going on to explain how the show has "shaped" her throughout the three seasons.

"Through playing Catherine I discovered parts of myself I didn't know I had," she said. "I love every crew member and cast member deeply. And although I won't get to lace up my corset one last time, I am forever proud of what we accomplished together."

Fanning also shared with fans her ideal ending for her character, now that one won't be shared on screen.

"In my mind Catherine is left 'shaking it all night long' finally stepping into the leader we always knew she would become, a multitude of lovers thrown in for good measure, many macaroons, vodka shots, long winded speeches, battles of wit, and of course HUUU-FUCKING-ZZAHHHHSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Nicholas Hoult, who played Fanning's on-screen husband Peter III in the Hulu series, commented on his co-star's post.

"Too many brilliant moments on and off screen," he wrote. "YOU ARE THE GREATEST."

News of The Great's cancellation was confirmed to Variety, though no reason was shared behind the decision to axe the show. The Great season three dropped in the UK in May this year, comprising ten episodes.

All three seasons of The Great are available on StarzPlay via Amazon Prime in the UK, and Hulu in the US.
