Driver's bizarre excuse after copping huge fine, losing licence for speeding

A man has offered an unbelievable excuse after being pulled over for driving more than 30km/h over the speed limit.

NSW Police pulled over the man who was driving a ute in a 60 zone in Wellington, southeast of Dubbo, on Sunday at about 10.15am.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Command wrote on Facebook he was clocked travelling at 96km/h.

“The driver said ‘it’s an 80(km/h) zone’,” police wrote.

“At the time he was not carrying his driver’s licence whilst driving.

“The male driver’s details were checked and he was issued an infringement, being exceed speed over 30km/h ($903) carrying 5 demerit points and drive motor vehicle not carry licence ($112).”

The man was told his licence will be suspended for three months and then offered a bizarre excuse.

“He attempted to downplay the offence in that he was not doing this sort of thing at night like others,” police wrote.

“Please remember irrespective of the time, drivers should drive to the conditions and the posted speed limit.”

The man might have avoided the second offence if he was pulled over in 2020 as NSW will roll out digital licences across the state.

Earlier this month, a NSW man was confused by what he thought was a ‘ridiculous fine’ handed to him while he was driving.

In March, another NSW man was fined for an unusual reason.
