NSW police officer 'seriously injured' after getting struck by stolen car

A police officer is seriously injured after being struck by a car during an arrest in north-east NSW.

According to NSW Police media, a stolen BMW was sighted in Tweed Heads by detectives from Tweed-Byron Police District at around 12.20am Sunday.

The vehicle was allegedly stolen earlier Saturday night during a robbery at Coopers Plains in Queensland - about an hour away across the NSW and Queensland border.

Police observed the vehicle entering the Tweed Heads Hospital carpark at around 1am.

When a police car entered the carpark, the stolen vehicle allegedly drove at the vehicle, deliberately crashing into the driver’s side.

When more police attended to assist, the stolen BMW struck a Senior Constable from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command.

The Senior Constable was “thrown to the roadway”, according to police.

The injured officer was taken to Tweed Heads Police Station and is receiving treatment for a dislocated shoulder, lacerations and bruising.

The BMW then allegedly fled the carpark, colliding with another car which contained a 15-month-old child who was not injured.

Three occupants of the stolen car - men aged 29, 22 and 20-years-old were arrested a short time later on Avla Street.

The three men were taken to Tweed Heads Police Station and are reportedly assisting with police inquiries.

Update: As of 3pm, Sunday, the three men in the stolen BMW have been charged.

All three of the men were denied bail and will appear in local court Monday.

Police have revealed there was a fourth male passenger in the car, who allegedly fled the scene and he is wanted by police.

The Senior Constable struck by the car has since been released from hospital.
