A young driver has copped an eye-watering fine and lost his licence after police say he was caught "making [an] unsafe manoeuvre" while travelling at a speed of 115 km/h on a road with a limit of just 50 kilometres.

Highway patrol spotted the 18-year-old Mitsubishi driver while performing speed enforcement duties on Campbell Hill Road in Guildford, Sydney on Friday night. The black Mitsubishi Lancer, being driven by the p-plater, was observed on the incorrect side of the road, across the double lines, attempting to overtake another vehicle.

Police stopped the male driver before issuing him three infringement notices totalling $3,568. These included exceeding the speed limit by more than 45 km/h, not keeping left of the dividing line and overtaking when unsafe.

The driver's licence was also suspended on the spot for six months and his number plate was confiscated for three months.
