Donald Trump rushed from briefing as shots fired outside White House

US President Donald Trump has been abruptly ushered from a coronavirus press conference after reports of shots being fired outside the White House.

Video shows a Secret Service agent approach Mr Trump on stage before he escorts him away.

The agent can be heard saying “shots fired” in Mr Trump’s ear after he didn’t hear the agent’s initial utterance.

The president responds “oh” and calmly walks off stage.

CBS News correspondent Skyler Henry was at the press conference, taking to Twitter to detail the incident.

He said it sounded like a gun was fired “right outside” the White House and the media was ordered to clear the lawn and to stay in the press office.

Henry shared video from the White House showing what appeared to be multiple police vehicles in the street.

Mr Trump returned to the briefing, telling reporters he understood an armed suspect had been shot and was en route to hospital.

"It's unfortunate that this is the world but the world has always been a dangerous place. It's not something that's unique," he said.

The US Secret Service tweeted saying the incident took place at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Ave.

More to come.
