Dog with lolling tongue named world's ugliest in annual contest after five years of trying

A Pekingese with a lolling tongue, often described as “always the bridesmaid, never the bride,” has finally fulfilled its owner’s dream by being named the World's Ugliest Dog.

Eight-year-old Wild Fang was crowned at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California, on Friday after being a runner-up on five previous occasions.

The picture-imperfect dog and his owner Ann Lewis, from Coos Bay, Oregon, are now set to receive a $5,000 first prize cheque on NBC News.

Wild Fang, whether intending to be cheeky or not, always has his tongue out due to a case of canine distemper that stunted the growth of his teeth and one of his legs.

“He has been [a runner up] five times, he was kind of like always the bridesmaid and never the bride,” contest judge Fiona Ma said.

“The story really tugged at our heartstrings and he deserved to win.”

Second place went to a wheelchair-bound pug named Rome with the bronze medal awarded to a mixed breed rescue called Daisy May.

The contest, held since 1976, raises awareness around animal rescue and adoption.

For organisers, the aim is not to mock the ugly dogs but instead to celebrate canine diversity.

Wild Thing, according to a statement, “survived” early vet procedures “but not without permanent damage”.

"His teeth did not grow in, causing his tongue to stay out and his right front leg paddles 24/7."

But with his fair share of spoils and attention, it’s clear that Wild Fang is enjoying his moment as the bride at last.
