Dog locked in cage on rising tide rescued at last minute

A dog locked in a cage as it became swamped by a high tide has been rescued at the last minute before it drowned.

Police are investigating after the dog was discovered in the water by somebody walking their dog in a park in Highlands, in the US state of New Jersey, on Monday morning local time.

The passer-by found the cage after their dog was alerted by something in the water.

They investigated and found the black wire cage with a small dog cowering inside.

“The cage was on a small portion of sand between the [rock] bulkhead and the water,” Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.

“The tide was coming in and the water had reached the cage. The Good Samaritan climbed over the wall and rescued the dog.”

The grey and white pit bull was taken to the Highlands Police Department, where they called Animal Control.

The prosecutor’s office said the cage was almost covered by the rising tide when Animal Control arrived on the scene.

“If not for the heroic rescue act of a Good Samaritan, the dog could have potentially drowned,” the statement said.

“Due to the tide schedule, we estimate that the dog was placed there between 4am and 6am.”

Authorities are calling for information about the owner of the dog and for anybody who witnessed the incident.
