Dog killed in goanna attack as owner injured while trying to save pet

A man has been seriously injured and his pet dog has died after they were attacked by a goanna at a popular north Queensland holiday destination.

The 72-year-old man and his wife tried to rescue their pet dog which was being attacked by the goanna near their Flametree home in the Whitsunday region about 3.30pm on Thursday, RACQ CQ Rescue said in a statement.

"The reptile suddenly turned on them, latching onto the man's right arm and leg as well as biting the woman's leg," RACQ CQ Rescue said.
