'CRAZY AS HELL': Disturbing discovery among children’s schoolbags

A Sunshine Coast family has encountered “the last thing” they would want to find in their living room closet.

Stu McKenzie, from Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers 24/7, was called to a home in Twin Waters on Wednesday.

The residents of the house called Mr McKenzie in after a snake slithered into their living room closet. Video uploaded to Facebook shows Mr McKenzie removing the snake from the home.

“They sneak into the towels too sometimes,” he says, looking through items in the closet for the cheeky snake.

A man living in the home points out the snake’s tail sticking out from under one of the closet’s doors.

Mr McKenzie carefully checks a child's backpack before noticing the snake’s tail behind some items inside. He carefully removes two more bags to find it lurking at the back of the closet.

Mr McKenzie identifies the snake as a red-bellied black.

According to the Australian Museum, the species is one of the most frequently encountered along the east coast and are responsible for a number of bites to humans.

Red-bellied blacks rarely attack people though and will only bite if harassed.

Mr McKenzie notes this one “is chunky”, likely from eating a number of frogs. He carefully removes the snake and places him in a bag.

“That’s the last thing you want (in your closet),” he said.

"Luckily the kids are out and about!" a female resident responds.

He later released the red-bellied black into the wild.

Facebook users disturbed by discovery

On Facebook, people found the snake “beautiful” but weren’t exactly willing to roll the red carpet out for one to visit their homes.

“Scary. How do they get in to a place like that?” one man wrote.

One woman wrote she “couldn’t imagine” finding one in her home while another wrote every time she views videos of Mr McKenzie removing hiding snakes it causes her blood pressure to rise.

"I would have had a heart attack if I found a snake hiding in my cupboards," another said.

"Crazy as hell," one user said.

Others called it “beautiful” and “cute”.

“Stunning snake,” one woman wrote.
