Diner's shock over 'upsetting' note left on receipt

A woman was left shocked after receiving a receipt at Mexican restaurant that seemingly scoffed at her food intolerances.

Food blogger Billie Geena, who suffers from irritable bowel syndrome or IBS, took to Twitter to complain about her experience at Amigos Mexican Kitchen in Sheffield, UK.

“My biggest anxiety about eating finally happened,” she wrote.

“I don’t choose to be picky, I have to have a very restricted diet or else I am violently ill. If I could eat it, I would.”

Billie had ordered sea bass from the menu but asked the dish contain no onion, garlic or milk as these items caused cramping and her stomach to ache.

When she received her bill, she noticed the receipt read: “1 fillet FB Sea bass #No onion no garlic no milk haha.”

“The food was lovely and the service has been excellent that evening until I got the receipt,” she told The Sun.

“I’ve only been on this stricter diet for less than a year and it’s been difficult adjusting.

“The restaurant has apologised but I want to raise awareness of just how upsetting this sort of thing can be for people.”

The “haha” comment was meant as a private message for the chef and should not have appeared on the bill, The Sun reports.

Billie said restaurant staff needed to better understand how serious food intolerances and allergies can be – that they are not the same thing as being on a “fad diet”.

“I apologised personally and spoke to the member of staff, who was given a verbal warning,” the restaurant’s owner Khalid Wani told The Sun newspaper.

“Nobody should make fun of people with food allergies or intolerances.”

Mr Wani said the waitress had not meant to make fun of Billie but the words should not have appeared on the receipt.
