'Depressing' home you can't even see from above listed for $800,000

You know it is a strange property listing when the most bizarre thing about it isn't the bathtub in the middle of the room.

At the start of July, a very peculiar home was listed in Nebraska and it appears an offer is already pending.

The decommissioned missile complex once stored America's first intercontinental ballistic missile and now someone has potentially snatched up the "super-hardened silo" that can withstand a nuclear attack.

"A blast from the past and built to last!" the listing boasts.

The images of the listing show all that is seen from ground level is just a concrete slab with a door. Once you're inside, it appears you have quite a few stairs ahead of you.

There's two levels of the underground bunker, the top level being "liveable". There's electricity, running water, and amenities such as a toilet and bathtub.

However, the bathtub seems to be quite literally in the middle of the room, with no walls for privacy.

The kitchen and dining areas are also on the upper level of the bunker. On the lower level, there is an unfurnished space with a tunnel that leads to the actual silo.

The listing said the structure is over 50 metres deep in total and is reinforced with thick concrete walls. There are also two “massive launch doors” which weigh over 50 tonnes.

"Talk about security! Unlimited possibilities," the agent said in the listing.

The bunker is listed for US$550,000 (A$806,000).

There are a few pieces of furniture in the home, though it isn't clear whether they are included with the bunker. They would come in handy as it would probably be very difficult to get furniture down there.

People divided over unusual home

When Realtor.com shared the listing to Facebook, it didn't seem as though too many people were eager to move in.

"Half a million for a never-ending nightmare," someone said.

Obviously, there are no windows or natural light to fill up the space and someone said this would just make living down there "depressing".

However, some pointed out that living in a hidden-away bunker would have some perks.

"You'd never have unwanted solar panel or security system salespeople show up at least," another person said.

It's arguably a very strange place to call home. However, Curbed reported that there is potentially a steady market for silo-living.

People are even completely revamping silos to give them new life and making them completely unrecognisable.

One couple from the US state of Kansas converted a silo into an underground castle and listed it on the market for US$3.2 million (A$4.6 million) back in 2020.
