Daredevil charged over base jump from Sydney crane

A daredevil who has been charged by police after leaping off a crane in Sydney’s CBD with a parachute says it was all worth it.

Jonathan Perherin, from France, has been charged over the dangerous stunt which saw him jump from the structure in Darling Harbour shortly after 3am on Tuesday.

“I climb a crane and jump from crane… because I like that,” he said.

The 24-year-old man allegedly broke into a construction site before scaling the 250-metre crane.

“It’s a beautiful spot. Many lights on the night. The water. It’s really beautiful,” he said.

It took Perherin 40 minutes to climb the crane and only 30 seconds to come back down.

He parachuted over several lanes of traffic and landed in between the International Convention Centre and the Sofitel hotel.

He was quickly apprehended by Darling Harbour rangers and then arrested by police.

“His equipment was faulty, the fact is he put himself and others in danger and he could have easily have killed himself or others,” Superintendent Michael Fitzgerald told reporters.

Perherin apologised for entering the worksite illegally yet showed little remorse for the jump.

“I apologise for entering illegally into the site, but not for the jump,” he said.
