Father drowns trying to rescue teen son on NSW mid-north coast beach

A father has drowned after trying to rescue his teenage son at a beach south of Coffs Harbour on the NSW mid-north coast.

Emergency services were called to Urunga Beach about 11.30am on Sunday when two swimmers appeared to be struggling in the water, according to police.

The 14-year-old boy made it back to shore before his 53-year-old father was pulled from the water by lifesavers.

He died at the scene.

NSW Ambulance duty operations manager Brendon Dean said it was imperative that people remained vigilant in and around the water as summer approaches.

"Accidents can happen in seconds but the impact remains for a lifetime," he said in a statement.

"Anybody who has experienced the horror of a drowning or near-drowning knows it is extremely traumatic for everyone."

The incident follows the drowning of a 45-year-old northern Sydney man at the NSW south coast's Manyana Beach on Thursday afternoon.
