Covid NSW: Infection exposed entire shopping mall for 11 days

·4-min read

Thousands of people in southwest Sydney have been forced into isolation after an entire shopping mall was exposed to a person with Covid over 11 days.

The Campsie Centre shopping mall, which has more than 50 stores, was deemed a Covid exposure site on Tuesday as the state recorded a high of 172 local cases for the current outbreak.

Anyone who visited the mall from July 14 to July 24 is considered a close contact and must immediately get tested and isolate for 14 days, regardless of the result.

Campsie residents urged to follow NSW Covid advice

Khal Asfour, mayor of Canterbury-Bankstown, told ABC on Tuesday morning the shopping centre’s Covid alert will “hurt the Campsie community”.

“I would imagine it would be cleaned very quickly and look, it's a large centre so obviously we want those shops to be reopened as soon as practically possible to make sure that people still are able to go in and get their essential needs,” he said.

Mr Asfour urged his community residents to listen to the health advice and get tested and isolate.

“We want to make sure that all residents that have visited there are listening to the health advice, and are sure their tests come back negative before they're able to go back out into the community to get vaccinated,” he said.

The shopping mall joins a growing list of now 408 Covid exposure sites in NSW.
