Couple's narrow escape as stray surfboard shatters windscreen on busy road

A Byron Bay couple has endured a terrifying ordeal when a stray surfboard came crashing onto their windscreen as they drove along a busy road.

Lara Uhl, 23, was driving on Bangalow Road towards Byron Bay with her boyfriend Joaquin Francis on Wednesday when the board suddenly appeared.

“It came out of nowhere… it was so scary,” Ms Uhl, originally from Germany, told Yahoo News.

The window was instantly smashed on the passenger’s side where Joaquin, a local musician, was sitting.

“My boyfriend was covered in glass. It would have hit him in the head,” Ms Uhl revealed.

Remarkably, Ms Uhl managed to steer the car safely to the side of the road despite swerving near surrounding traffic.

The couple quickly turned to see where the board had come from but to their dismay the driver responsible appeared oblivious to the incident and drove off without stopping.

They called police straight away, with officers attending the scene before taking the board as they search for its owner.

Ms Uhl has shared photos of the board with Yahoo News in hope the owner recognises it and comes forward.

She said they were driving a white van which was possibly a Toyota.

The terrifying incident comes just two days after the couple purchased the car and on Joaquin’s 24th birthday.

“This day couldn’t get any worse,” Ms Uhl admitted.

The couple are hopeful the owner will come forward and cover the cost of the windscreen, believing the incident was simply an honest mistake.

“If you know who owns this surfboard please let us know because we don’t have the money for our car,” she admitted.

The owner of the board is advised by police to contact Byron Bay police station.

Last year, a Queensland woman was lucky to escape unharmed when a piece of wood penetrated her windscreen after flying off a passing truck.
