Couple's heartache as miracle IVF baby dies within an hour of birth

Baby Kyson's life was cruelly cut short and his parents are desperately searching for answers.

A couple who spent five harrowing years undergoing IVF are desperately searching for answers after their ‘beautiful baby boy’ died within an hour of his birth.

Heartbroken Jenay Berg and Aaron Hilton were told newborn Kyson passed away shortly after his birth on September 6. The New Zealand couple have received an outpouring of support from friends, family and strangers since receiving the tragic news.

“It’s just really, really cruel — to get through this far, having IVF, and everything else and have it work, then to literally at the last second, when you’re really, really close to that final stretch, to have it all taken away,” Ms Berg told the New Zealand Herald.

The parents-to-be revealed how they were referred to a fertility clinic five years ago. They finally found out on Christmas Day last year that they were pregnant — the ultimate gift.

“We were just over the moon,” Ms Berg said. Her pregnancy went smoothly and the day before Kyson’s due date, the mum-to-be went to the hospital in the morning to be induced. “Everything was fine all day,” said Mr Hilton.

At 2.06am Kyson was born and was placed on his mum’s chest. Worryingly, he did not cry or move, so the staff rubbed his chest and legs, but he didn’t respond.

“I saw him open his eyes and move his mouth a little bit and then they cut the cord and took [him] straight over to the table,” Mr Hilton said.

Couple's anxious 45-minute wait

Specialists soon raced in and worked on the baby. “It was the longest 45 minutes of our lives,” said Ms Berg. Then, the worst happened.

“Then they came over and told us he didn’t make it,” said Mr Hilton. Less than an hour after giving birth, the couple were saying goodbye to their first born child.

Since the death remains unexplained, the grieving dad had to give a statement to police.

The couple got to take photos and spend a few hours with their baby boy before he was taken for a post-mortem examination. The death has also been reported to the coroner.

“We still haven’t heard anything back, it’s still unexplained, we’re still waiting on more tests.”

An outpouring of support

The couple have been overwhelmed by the support of their friends, family and community. One friend even set up a Give a Little fundraising page.

“We felt the love so, so much. I could have never imagined it would get as high as this.”

The couple hope that sharing Kyson’s story might help other families going through a similar loss. “This is something that no one should have to go through,” Ms Berg said.
