Couple dead as planes collide mid-air at Queensland airport

It's believed one of the plane was under tow at the time of the crash.

A couple in their 60s is dead after two light planes collided mid-air in a "significant incident" at Caboolture Airfield.

The aircrafts were believed to be "close to the ground", and possibly taking off when the crash occurred at around 10.30am on Friday morning, Inspector Paul Ready told reporters at the scene.

The deceased couple were inside the same plane, while a third man aged about 70, was in the second plane.

"At the moment there is two deceased in a plane that was taking off in a plane on the eastern end," he said.

The other person had no significant injuries and was assisting investigators to help "piece together exactly what happened".

Inspector Ready said the loss of life was "devastating", and said the third occupant's survival is "probably quite lucky when you look at the damage on the ground".

Senior Operations Supervisor Matthew Davis described the scene as "incredibly confronting".

"Any incident involving the loss of life, particularly under these circumstances extremely, extremely difficult and hard, obviously, for the first responders and most importantly for the family," he said.

It's believed one of the planes was under tow at the time of the collision, with images from the airfield showing debris spread out across the runway.

The planes were both privately owned, and one is registered to a gliding company, ABC News reported

The airfield is visible from the Bruce Highway, and police are encouraging anyone who saw the incident to come forward.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has closed the aerodrome until further notice.
