Baby tests positive for coronavirus in South Australia

A baby has tested positive for coronavirus in South Australia, health authorities announced on Thursday afternoon.

On Wednesday, SA Health said a 40-year-old woman who travelled from Iran tested positive to the illness.

One day later, her baby has now also tested positive.

It is believed the woman, who is in a stable condition at Flinders Medical Centre, arrived in Adelaide on March 1 from Iran following a stopover in Kuala Lumpur. She was on board Malaysia Airlines flight 139 and SA Health officials are urgently contacting other passengers.

Anyone on the same flight is urged to call the Communicable Disease Control Branch on 1300 232 272.

Both mother and baby are doing well, health officials said.

Another South Australian has also been confirmed with the disease on Thursday afternoon, after a 58-year-old man who arrived in the state from Taiwan on March 3 also tested positive.

The two new cases are the sixth and seventh to be confirmed in South Australia.

“Whilst this is an anxious time, we are on the front foot in South Australia,” Premier Steven Marshall said this afternoon. “Making sure we put in all the necessary preparations in place to control any spread of the coronavirus here in South Australia.”

Today SA Health is opening a dedicated clinic for coronavirus patients in the Royal Adelaide Hospital in hopes it will ease pressure on doctors and emergency departments as cases are expected to rise.

“Today we are standing up a dedicated clinic so that we can have the rapid assessment and testing of people who may be thinking they have contracted the coronavirus,” Mr Marshall said.

“We are doing this so that we can stay ahead of this disease.”
