Coronavirus: 18-year-old becomes youngest to die in UK

An 18-year-old has become the youngest person in the UK to die from coronavirus, as the latest figures for the nation show a death toll of 281 and confirmed cases passing 5,740.

It is understood the 18-year-old had an underlying condition. There were 48 more deaths recorded in the UK on Sunday, with 37 of those being in England.

The National Health Service said all those who died in England in the past day were in vulnerable groups including those with underlying health issues, and were aged between 18 and 102.

England has the most confirmed cases in the UK with 4,792 cases, followed by Scotland with 416, Wales with 347 and 128 in Northern Ireland.

The UK has the sixth highest death toll in the world for coronavirus-related deaths.

Across the UK 281 deaths have been recorded, while 135 patients have recovered.

Like Australia, the UK is taking drastic measures to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has warned if people neglect to follow social distancing measures, the government may need to impose curfews and travel restrictions to halt the spread of the disease.

"Stay two metres apart. It's not such a difficult thing. Do it," Johnson said at a news briefing on Sunday.

Pubs, clubs and gyms have already closed, but social media on Sunday was awash with pictures of people congregating in parks and food markets, apparently ignoring advice to stay two metres apart.

Parks in London are already closing down as authorities struggle to slow the advance of coronavirus through the population, the biggest public health crisis since the influenza pandemic of 1918.

Iconic fast food restaurant McDonalds announced all restaurants in the UK and Ireland will be shut by 7pm on Monday.

“We will work with local community groups to responsibly distribute food and drink from our restaurants in the coming days,” the company said in a statement.

In Australia, more than 1609 coronavirus cases have been confirmed as of 10:00am on Monday.

Across the world, 336,000 cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed, as of 1.35pm on Monday, according to Johns Hopkins University.

More than 14,640 people have died, and last week Italy surpassed China with the most recorded deaths - the death toll sits at 5,476 in Italy, while Hubei, in China, where the virus was first detected, has recorded 3,153.

However, 98,333 people from around the world have recovered from the disease, some 59,879 from Hubei, China.
