Cop abandons bride at altar after kidnappers interrupt wedding

A brave policeman was forced to run away from the altar towards the sound of gunfire after a shootout between cops and kidnappers interrupted his own wedding.

Military Police officer Rodrigo Prujansky, 40, was listening to his wife-to-be recite her vows at the wedding venue — the Condominio Bora Bora Barra Resort Real — in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro on last Saturday, when the sound of gun fire suddenly filled the air.

Footage from the event shows guests ducking to the floor, while Prujansky does the opposite and, without fear, marches towards where the ruckus is coming from.

Prujansky said that he and 30 work colleagues he had invited to the wedding made their way out of the hall, where they came across on-duty police officers on the scene.

"We were surprised by an exchange of fire," he said.

"As it was very close, we decided to check out the situation. We act like a sheepdog, we are trained to protect the flock.

"At the time, we grouped together automatically and came across a riot cop who directed us, and we started to follow him through the building."

It transpired that two criminals involved in the kidnapping of a businessman had taken shelter in the same resort the wedding was taking place in.

Moments earlier, one suspect had died after being shot and another had managed to escape. The two who were cornered in the resort, however, were arrested.

Three cars were also damaged in the shootout.

Prujansky said that after the arrests, the wedding resumed.

"It was fine, we calmed down the guests and started over. Nobody left. Everything was perfect," he said.

Prujansky and his partner have been together for five years. They were due to tie the knot in 2020, but the coronavirus pandemic postponed the wedding to the recent date.

The kidnapped businessman was reportedly released unharmed.
