Coles customer baffled by bizarre pricing in fresh produce aisle

A shopper has urged others to pay close attention when trying to find a bargain.

A Coles customer in NSW has questioned the supermarket's multi-buy pricing this week, urging other shoppers to always take a second look when shopping for discounts.

Sharing an image of a coriander display, the customer indicated he was scratching his head at the yellow specials ticket, which showed the price for coriander bunches at one for $1.60 or two for $5.50. This amounts to an increase of $1.15 per item if a customer buys two.

"Lucky I only needed one bunch of coriander," the shopper wrote on the Coles Facebook page, before going on to say he did discuss the strange pricing with a staff member, who confirmed it was correct. He elaborated that nearby parsley and mint were priced at $3.20 each or two for $5.50, a saving of 90 cents.

"It is only a small thing," he continued, "but people usually assume that anything with a yellow tag and especially 'two for $x.xx' is an instant saving. Seems like it's not always the case and better take a second look."

Coles responds

Coles has confirmed to Yahoo News that the confusing price tag was an error isolated to the store in question. A spokesperson for the retailer said the single bunch price looks to be a store markdown to sell an abundance of stock, as the recommended price is $3.20 each.

The herb would have scanned at the cheaper price, meaning if the customer bought two, he would've been charged $3.20 in total at the checkout. The spokesperson added that, apart from at this particular store, "customers in Victoria and NSW can get great value on sleeved coriander for $3.20 each or two for $5.50".
