Clubs split over taking a knee with teams seeking guidance from EFL

Clubs in the Football League are increasing split over taking the knee before matches and want clarification on the League’s position.

One Carabao Cup tie this week was marred by a row when an EFL club and their Premier League opponents clashed over whether to take the knee.

The top-flight club, who were in favour, eventually prevailed, with both teams performing the gesture because the EFL side felt they would generate unwanted attention by making a stand.

There are now fears there could be further splits between clubs, with some sides feeling they are being forced to continue the practice despite reservations about its effectiveness.

At least one club has written to the EFL to request an unequivocal position from the League on the gesture, which remains universal in the top flight.

The EFL have consistently said it is up to players to decide whether they take the knee but they have not offered guidance when clubs disagree.

QPR director of football Les Ferdinand said this week the gesture had become “little more than good PR”.
