Child dragged almost 100m 'trying to stop mum from drink driving'

An alleged drunk driver has been arrested after a bystander spotted a young girl clinging onto the handle of the car door and being dragged down the street for about 100 metres.

Erin Garcia, 44, left her mum’s house in Placentia, in the US state of California, on Thursday, about 11.30pm local time, police said.

But police will allege she was intoxicated and her eight-year-old daughter tried to stop her from driving.

“The child grabbed the passenger’s door handle and told Garcia to stop,” police said.

Garcia did not stop though, police said. Instead she got into the car and allegedly drove about 90 metres as her daughter held onto the car door handle.

A bystander witnessed this and police claim they and Garcia’s mum then tried to get her out of the car.

They were unable to do so and Garcia drove off, dragging the bystander a short distance too, police said.

Police arrived at the home later and found Garcia hiding in bushes in the backyard. It’s alleged she kicked at officers as she was being arrested. Her daughter was found with abrasions to her legs and feet.

Garcia has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon, child endangerment and battery against a police officer.
