Cassidy keeps Glasgow dream alive

UPDATE: Callum Cassidy has kept alive his hopes of representing Australia at the Commonwealth Games later this year with victory in the first round at the national championships in Fremantle this afternoon.

However, Cassidy may need a favour from the doctor if he is to continue in the tournament.

The Bradricks 64kg fighter squeezed past NSW's Koen Mazoudier by the tightest of margins at the Esplanade Hotel, winning on the judges' preference following a tie.

The bout was ended after 1:43 of the second round following an accidental head clash, which caused the Perth boxer to suffer a cut above his left eye.

Now he must be passed fit to fight before facing No1 ranked Dave Biddle (SA) in Wednesday night's quarter-final.

Cassidy was the first West Aussie to compete in either the elite men's or women's category, from which the eventual winners will go on to box for Australia in the Glasgow Games in July.

Jayden Hansen, who fights out of Fox's Den in Gosnells, joined his fellow West Aussie into the last eight tonight with a 3-0 victory over Queensland's Liam Pope at 56kg.

But there was disappointment for Neal Swinton (Petersons, 69kg), who went down 3-0 to Cam Eyes (Vic).

The boxing, which began at 11am today with the U15s category, runs until Saturday night, when the elite finals take place.
