Carlton causes outrage with changes to beer bottles

Beer brand Carlton Dry has bowed to public pressure after receiving backlash for changing their bottles.

The company changed their twist top bottles to ring pull caps in October 2018, causing public outrage.

Carlton Dry also downsized the bottles from 355 ml to 330 ml, but the price remained the same.

“One of the reasons for the bottle change was to make sure our beer remains one of the most affordable in the market and we also heard some of the twist tops didn’t come off properly so incorporated ring pulls as a part,” the company wrote on Facebook in November.

However, customers were unhappy at the new ring pull caps. Beer drinkers complained that the ring pulls tabs were difficult to open, caused cuts on their fingers and made them spill their beer.

“The changes that you have made to your beer are downright unethical, rude and quite frankly un-Australian,” one Facebook user wrote.

“The new pull lid has cut me too,” another Facebook user said.

“I have tried the new so-called easy pull tabs and lost half my already reduced beer,” one Facebook user wrote.

“Not to mention my Kransky fingers don’t fit into the pull tab hole.”

“Change the stubbies back to how they were,” another Facebook user pleaded.

Other customers claimed the ring pull tabs would tear off without opening the bottle and also made the beer taste flat.

The company apologised for the change and announced it will be returning to twist tops.

“A beer that’s now harder to open! We clearly got this wrong and we’re sorry,” Carlton Dry posted on Facebook on January 14.

“Last October we replaced our twist off caps with a ring pull cap and it didn’t take long for all of you loyal drinkers to let us know that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

“Ring pull bad. Twist top good. Changing back at good price.”
