A great-grandfather has been left traumatised after a violent carjacking in Forrestfield in which he had a wheel brace swung at his head.

Truck driver Randall Konkel was on his way to work about 4.45am Monday when he noticed a car flashing its headlights in his review-mirror along Dundas Road.

The vehicle suddenly swerved in front of Mr Konkel, who braked, before a man in the passenger seat jumped out with the makeshift weapon in his hand.

The man began beating on the windows of Mr Konkel's Holden utility, demanding the 69-year-old get out of the car.

"He had an angled wheel brace with the one socket on the end," Mr Konkel said.

"He was belting the glass and then he started belting the panels on the side of the ute. I couldn't work out what I had done.

"He was screaming - really screaming - at me in the loudest voice you can imagine, 'Get out, get out, get out'."

As Mr Konkel tried to lock the door the man yanked it opened and demanded again for him to get out.

When Mr Konkel stood up the man swung the wrench at him, narrowly missing his face.

"I leant back and it just brushed my shoulder," he said.

"It was a pretty hard swing. I just put my hands up and I backed off.

"I was scared witless."

The thieves made off with the car, a 2002 HSV Maloo which Mr Konkel described as his "pride and joy".

It is understood they had stolen another car about 20 minutes before the incident.

Mr Konkel's wallet, house keys and the keys to his truck, which were all inside the utility, were also taken.

The grandfather of 17 and great-grandfather of two admitted he's had trouble sleeping since the incident and was constantly anxious.

A shaken Anne Konkel said she had been left feeling unsafe in her own home, where the couple had the locks changed on Monday.

"It's like a bad dream," she said.

Anyone who witnessed the attack is urged to call Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.
