A mother of three out for a family trip to their local park has shared her disbelief after spotting a young girl fishing in croc-infested waters.

Melinda MacMillan had ventured down to Sanctuary Lakes in the Northern Territory suburb of Palmerston on Thursday afternoon when she saw the girl, she believed to be about 10 years old, standing in knee-deep water just metres away from a crocodile trap.

“I’d taken the kids down to the park to look for NT rocks and I saw her, I said, ‘Oh my God, there’s a girl in the water,'” Ms MacMillan told Yahoo7 News.

“You can see the girl’s mother was right there sitting on the bank just looking at the ducks… she didn’t seem fazed at all.

Ms MacMillan said the girl made her way in and out of the water on several occasions as she attempted to sort out her fishing rod.

Photos taken at the park show the young girl standing about 15 metres of the baited trap.

“Some people are a bit careless when it comes to crocs up here,” Ms MacMillan said.

“It’s just a freshy (freshwater crocodile) but a crocodile is still a crocodile.

“If she stood on it, it would attack her.”

The Palmerston Council told Yahoo7 News they were aware there was a freshwater crocodile in the lake and advised locals to be vigilant.

The council spokesperson said a trap had since been put in place and there had been attempts to capture it, but added it was the responsibility of Crocodile Capture and Management to do so.

“Residents are urged to be ‘croc wise’, stay away from the water’s edge and not to allow dogs to swim in the lake,” the council wrote in a Facebook post in March.

“Given the large amount of rainfall experienced recently please be aware that crocodiles are on the move and may take up residence in any of the waterways around Palmerston.”

Yahoo7 News has contacted Crocodile Capture and Management for comment.
