Squirrel strangled by jar renews calls to dispose of rubbish properly

There have been calls for people to dispose of rubbish properly after photos emerged of a dead squirrel trapped in a plastic jar.

The pictures were uploaded by Scottish conservation group Grampian Moorland to Facebook on Thursday, after one of its members found the squirrel in the woods next to a main road.

“One of our game keepers found this poor soul in a plastic jar, at woods, next to the busy main road, a popular scenic and tourist route,” the group wrote.

“Hopefully it will highlight the importance of discarding your rubbish appropriately.”

The post has been shared more than 780 times with many decrying its death due to “selfish” people.

“It drives me mad, every roadside and junction you see all the litter! Dirty idiots that they are! That poor wee soul must’ve had a hellish death!” one man wrote.

A woman suggested the squirrel may have “suffered for days” before its death.

The BBC identified the animal as a red squirrel.

In 2008, the Scottish Wildlife Trust introduced a four-year project to save the red squirrel population over concerns it could become extinct.

The species isn’t currently endangered but is in decline.
