Bus driver charged with being on phone after crash that killed two men on scooter

A bus driver has been charged with being on his mobile phone after a crash which killed two men on a motor scooter in Sydney’s south.

Two men, aged 32 and 44, were riding on the scooter when they were involved in a collision in Kingsgrove at about 8.30pm on Monday.

Police allege the two-wheeled vehicle was waiting to turn right into Vivienne Street from Kingsgrove Road when it was struck from behind by a bus travelling south.

The scooter was then pushed into the path of an oncoming car travelling in the opposite direction.

The rider, 32, and his 44-year-old pillion passenger, died at the scene.

The driver of the bus and the car, who were unhurt, were taken to hospital for mandatory tests.

The 49-year-old bus driver has been charged with two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death, two counts of negligent driving occasioning death, driving using mobile phone when not permitted and driving while not wearing a seatbelt.

He was refused bail and is due to appear in Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday.

There were no passengers on the bus at the time of the crash with the driver having just left a depot and about to begin the run, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.
