A bride-to-be has revealed her shock at the reaction of her ‘good friends’ when she told them she had found her dream wedding dress in an H&M sale.

The woman shared on Mumsnet how she had come across the lace, off-shoulder design in the Swedish high street store and that it ‘fitted really well’ - but was left baffled by the response from some people in her life.

In a post on the forum titled 'To be surprised at reactions to wedding dress', she explained how she had been ‘dreading’ trying on expensive options in specialist wedding dress shops.

“All the ones round here are little boutiques where everything costs an arm and a leg and you have an assistant with you the whole time,” the future bride wrote.

The poster explained how she had come across the affordable H&M number by accident.

“Saw a photo of a lovely, fairly traditional dress from H&M of all places (they're great but never knew they did properly formal dresses),” she continued.

“Had a look at the site and it turned out the dress was on sale because it was pretty much sold out except in my short a*** size.”

After ordering it online, she tried it on in front of family and even her future mother-in-law, revealing that everyone agreed the dress was the one.

However, she had been left deflated after a ‘number of good friends’ had let slip their surprise at the origins of her chosen wedding dress.

“I was so pleased and felt like it was sorted after that,” she explained.

“But as others started to ask if I'd got a dress and where it was from, the reaction has been one of bemusement, really.

“I thought people would just say something vaguely positive and leave it there, but a number of good friends have asked if I'm definitely going to go with it, I'm not going to go to a 'proper shop' etc.”

The woman asked her fellow Mumsnet users what she should do, wondering if the dress was ugly, or if she should just ignore her friends’ opinions.

People rushed to reassure her that the wedding dress was ‘lovely’ and encouraged her to ‘ignore’ the comments of others.

One person wrote: "It’s absolutely gorgeous! And you will look utterly beautiful in it. Please don’t fret about where it came from! Wedding dress comments are usually borne of jealousy.

"Be proud in the fact that you will look stunning for a more modest amount that will leave you with more spending money for your honeymoon or much needed home essentials."

Another commented: "People are daft. It’s lovely. Congratulations and I hope you have a lovely time in it!"

A third shared: "Oh that dress is lovely. Ignore everyone's comments, you'll look fab."

Of course it is completely acceptable to spend whatever you want on a dress for your big day. Some brides have shared their amazing finds in op shops, while there are also plenty of less expensive gowns available to be purchased online.

Just this year online retailer Showpo launched an affordable range of wedding dresses for the budget bride. And there are some gorgeous ones to choose from:
