Brave mum saves daughter, 1, from 'traumatic' greyhound attack

A toddler is undergoing plastic surgery after her mum saved her from being mauled by a dog in Melbourne’s southeast.

The greyhound attacked the one-year-old girl at her home in Cranbourne West on Saturday about 9am. She suffered severe facial injuries and was taken to The Royal Children’s Hospital in a serious condition.

Ambulance Victoria’s David Llewelyn described the attack as “sad and unfortunate”.

The girl’s mum was also injured and taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.

“She (the toddler) has been mauled quite significantly around her face and head neck area,” Mr Llewelyn said.

“The young girl will need extensive repair and will take some time to recover.”

It is believed the child’s father breeds greyhounds at the home, and one of them escaped its cage and attacked the pair.

“The mother was mauled as well around the arms and legs trying to protect her daughter,” Mr Llewelyn said.

“(It was) an abnormal and concerning event, but nonetheless we just have to be careful around dogs and animals.

“It was very traumatic, there’s no getting away from some of the things that we see.”

When asked if there have been issues with this particular dog before the father replied: “No, nothing.”

Casey City Council said in a statement it was investigating what happened and had seized the dog.
