Boy fighting for life after being mauled in dog attack

A primary school aged boy is in critical condition after he was bitten by a dog at a home on the Gold Coast.

A spokesperson from Queensland Ambulance confirmed to Yahoo News Australia a male patient was transported to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

Emergency services were called out to Varsity Lakes at around 11.45am on Friday.

The child not only sustained life-threatening injuries, but also went into cardiac arrest before he was given a blood transfusion at the scene, Queensland Ambulance said.

An adult female, identified as the boy's grandmother by 9News, was also transported to hospital after sustaining injuries in the attack.

The woman is in stable condition.

The Gold Coast Bulletin is reporting that the boy is five-years-old. Early reports suggest he was playing with the dog in the backyard before it attacked him.

After the boy was taken to hospital, he underwent emergency surgery.

Two dogs have been taken from the property where the attack happened, including a dog which is believed to be responsible for the attack, according to the Courier Mail.
