Boy, 5, dies after being stabbed in domestic incident

A five-year-old boy has died after he was stabbed in an early morning “domestic incident” at a home in Sydney’s northwest, police have said.

A NSW Police statement said the boy was in a critical condition when he was raced to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in an ambulance under police escort, but later died.

Police arrested a 36-year-old man, believed to be known to the boy, and took him to Castle Hill police station.

The incident happened at a Carlingford property about 7am Friday, with the boy and his grandmother going to a nearby street to raise the alarm.

Police said emergency services arrived at the property after reports a child had been stabbed.

The grandmother fled with the five-year-old boy to a house after he was stabbed.

“I think the realisation came to her in this street that he was so unwell that she needed to get some expert assistance,” The Hills Police Area Command Superintendent Rob Critchlow told reporters.

“An ambulance was summoned and they were here very quickly as were police from my command.”

The grandmother, aged in her 60s, was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance for shock.

Supt Critchlow said the grandmother acted in a heroic and caring manner.

“She’s been presented with something terrible and has done her best to get the young boy to safety and to get him treatment.

“Sadly, despite her best efforts, there was nothing more she could have done.

“We’re grateful to her for what she did at the scene.”

A second crime scene has been established at a home on Paul Place.

Investigations are continuing and anybody with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or lodge a report online.
