'It's a bloody mess': Frustrated senior cop's frank message after double-fatal crash

A frustrated senior Queensland police officer has delivered a frank but powerful message after responding to a double-fatal crash which saw two people “incinerated”.

Sergeant Steve Webb said he was “so frustrated” after responding to the fatal head-on crash between two cars, which left two people dead, on the Bruce Highway near Gin Gin, almost 350km north of Brisbane, on Thursday night.

“It’s a bloody mess,” Sgt Webb said.

“Don’t be bloody idiots. Take responsibility for yourselves. The police can’t save you. You need to save yourselves.”

Sgt Webb, who has been a crash investigator for 25 years, said two people were “incinerated” in one of the cars.

One of the cars crossed a double-line on the road.

“It just doesn’t stop,” Sgt Webb said.

The senior cop added he was frustrated.

It was the third time in 12 months he had responded to a fatal crash on the same part of the Bruce Highway.

“What have we got to do?” Sgt Webb said.

“We’ve got two people who’ve lost their lives and a number of others who have been injured. A lot of lives have been affected tonight and I just don’t know what to do anymore.”

“We try to educate them, we talk to them, we talk to young people but in the end, they have to take responsibility for their actions.”

Sgt Webb said people “can’t blame the road” for fatalities and urged people to be patient when driving.

“Arrive late rather than be dead on time,” he said.

The forensic crash unit is investigating the double-fatal crash.
