Bikies await high court verdict

The fight against Queensland's controversial anti-bikie laws has wrapped up in the High Court.

Lawyers made their final submissions this morning.

The United Motorcycle Council is challenging the Newman government's Vicious Lawless Association Disestablishment (VLAD) legislation and related laws on behalf of 17 gangs.

The laws were introduced last October after a vicious gang brawl on the Gold Coast.

They prohibit three or more bikies gathering in public and impose lengthy prison sentences on gang members convicted of crimes, among other measures.

Hells Angels member Stefan Kuczborski, barrister Wayne Baffsky and UMCQ spokesman Mick Kosenko.

Opponents argue they are constitutionally invalid and breach notions of equal justice.

However, other states have expressed interest in introducing similar legislation.

A decision is expected to be handed down before Christmas.
