Big W shopper shocked by $120 Lindt Easter bunny: 'More than my groceries'

The shopper was stunned to see the price of the Lindt gold bunny in a locked security cage on the shelves of Big W.

It seems like the Easter selection gets bigger and bigger every year in supermarkets and the latest find in Big W has definitely raised eyebrows, with one shopper saying the extravagant item would set her back the same as a grocery shop.

Over the weekend a mum visited the Big W store in Chermside in Brisbane's north and was stunned to find a large Lindt bunny, wrapped in the iconic golden foil, perched high on the self checkouts. It was almost identical to the standard chocolate bunny but there was one key difference — the sheer size of it. The bunny, enclosed in a plastic box, is made up of one kilogram of milk chocolate and cost $120.

"No way… that is more than my grocery shopping," the mum said online as she passed the chocolate in store.

Aussies call out the 'crazy' price for Lindt chocolate bunny

After the shopper shared a video online Aussies were shocked by the item and its price tag, with some questioning why it costs so much.

"It's crazy because the 100g are only $8 each. I know $80 is still a lot but why such an outrageous price of $120?" the Aussie questioned, while another pointed out you could buy "many delicious treats" for the same price as the chocolate bunny.

Others admitted they would love to have the large chocolate bunny but would opt for a patient approach, instead visiting their local store after Easter had passed in the hope to bag a bargain.

"l'll be going once Easter is over to see if those bad boys are still available at a special price," a third said.

Big W told Yahoo News the chocolate bunny was a "limited edition" which is only available in select stores across the country.

"For the chocoholics looking to indulge, BIG W has a Limited Edition 1kg solid Lindt Easter Chocolate Bunny available in a select number of stores while stocks last," a spokesperson said.

El Niño weather event impacts cocoa production

Severe weather events in West Africa — where the majority of the world's coca is produced — has caused a surge in chocolate prices and will likely impact the consumer in the future. Since the start of the year there has been a near 60 per cent increase in the price of cocoa.

An El Niño weather phenomenon has damaged crops, impacting the available yield for chocolate manufacturers to buy and make our beloved chocolate treats.

"We have seen soybeans come down a lot, wheat is relatively flat but if we are looking ahead to Easter and Easter eggs, well we can expect chocolate to be more expensive because the prices for that have soared," analyst Jane Foley from Rabobank warned last month.

Yahoo News reached out to Big W for comment.
