Benedict Cumberbatch gives disappointing update on Doctor Strange's future

Benedict Cumberbatch has provided a disappointing update regarding his future as MCU superhero Doctor Strange.

Last seen leaping into the Dark Dimension with Charlize Theron's Clea in the 2022 blockbuster Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Dr Stephen Strange could well turn up in the fifth Avengers movie, but nothing is concrete right now.

Quizzed by The Playlist if a third Doctor Strange might arrive before then, Cumberbatch simply replied: "Who knows! I'm not sure where he's been and what he's been up to and who with, but yeah, I know as little as you."

Further along their chat, the The End We Start From actor paid tribute to Marvel Studios for elevating its output with maverick ideas.

"I take my hat off to anybody who's using the resources to try and make something better and just improve and improve and improve right up to the end," said Cumberbatch.

"I mean, the most famous stories after the premiere, I think of the first Avengers, [Robert] Downey Jr suggested the Shawarma scene and then it was put in for the final cut that then got distributed. I mean, that's fun to think you can still do that."

Meanwhile, Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron previously teased how Strange and Clea's cinematic connection would go on to mirror the source material.

"[They] have a lot of great adventures in the comics, and we knew we wanted to introduce her, but it felt like we had to close the book to some extent on his love story with Christine Palmer, Rachel McAdams' character," he explained to Deadline's Hero Nation podcast.

Doctor Strange and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are streaming on Disney+.
