Baby left in unit died as mum partied for six days

A 19-year-old mother has pled guilty to the death of her baby daughter after it’s alleged she left her alone for six days while going on a party bender.

Verphy Kudi pleaded guilty to manslaughter on Friday (local time) in Brighton, UK, according to Sussex police.

Lewes Crown Court heard on December 5, 2019, Kudi left her 20-month-old daughter, Asiah, alone in a flat while she left to celebrate her 18th birthday over a period of six days.

On December 11, Kudi returned to the flat to find Asiah unresponsive and called emergency services.

The baby was taken by ambulance to the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital in Brighton and confirmed dead soon after arrival.

A postmortem and subsequent further forensic tests found Asiah's death due to neglect.

Investigators found CCTV footage of Kudi leaving her flat on December 5 and uncovered she had then attended parties in London, Coventry and Solihull near Birmingham before returning to the address six days later, according to local outlet The Argus.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Wolstenholme said the case has been “particularly distressing” for everyone involved.

"This was a particularly distressing case for my team and me to investigate, and has caused great sorrow amongst Verphy's family and the many agencies that have supported Verphy and Asiah,” Detective Wolstenholme said in a statement.

Kudi remains in custody and will be sentenced in May.
