Six-week-old baby girl dies as twin sister is left fighting for life

A baby girl is dead and her twin is critical after an incident in Brisbane's south.

Police and paramedics were called to the home at Sunray Street, Sunnybank Hills about 6am on Wednesday and have confirmed a baby, believed to be six weeks old, is dead.

Its twin is being transported to hospital in a critical condition, and a crime scene has been established.

The Courier-Mail reports that the mother woke up and allegedly found bedding was covering the children.

Police would not confirm initial reports the babies were injured after becoming covered with bedding while in bed with the mother.

“Preliminary investigations suggest the babies were sleeping together throughout the night and were discovered unresponsive this morning,” Queensland Police said in a statement.

“Police are not treating the baby’s death as suspicious. A post mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of the baby’s death.”

A neighbour told The Courier-Mail she heard a man, believed to be the baby’s father, “howling and screaming”.

“I thought someone was dead and it really scared me. He was so upset,” the neighbour told the paper.

Officers from the Child Protection and investigation Unit will continue their investigations.
