Baby boy critically injured by driver's airbag in crash

An 11-month-old boy is fighting for his life after suffering critical injuries in a crash in Sydney’s southwest.

The baby was a passenger in a BMW sedan driven by a 31-year-old-man when it collided with a Mercedes Benz being driven by a 32-year-old man about 5.50pm on Monday in Lurnea.

The crash caused the front driver’s airbag in the BMW to deploy.

Paramedics treated the child at the scene before he was airlifted to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead with critical head and facial injuries.

NSW Police confirmed to Yahoo7 News they believed the baby’s injuries were caused by the airbag.
Both drivers were not physically injured but were taken to hospital for mandatory tests, according to NSW Police.

Officers from Liverpool Police Area Command and the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit attended the scene.

Investigators will determine where the child was seated when the airbag was deployed.
