Avert gaze to catch eclipse from 1pm
WA skygazers will be able to catch a glimpse of the first solar eclipse of 2014 this afternoon.
A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth, blocking out the sun for a short period of time.
Only a partial solar eclipse will be visible from WA, with the moon covering part of the sun.
The eclipse will begin just after 1pm in Perth and will peak at 2.42pm before ending about 4pm.
The Perth Observatory has warned looking directly into the sun is dangerous and can lead to blindness.
"Indirect projection is the safest way to view this eclipse," it said.
"A piece of cardboard with a small hole of around 1mm in diameter is held up so its projected image of the sun falls on a white surface. Looking at the white surface, you can safely view the indirect projection of the sun."
The International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research's Guerilla Astronomers will set up a solar telescope in Forrest Place this afternoon.
