Three Australians arrested after 'attempting to import crystal meth in small plane from US'
Three men have been arrested after trying to import 255 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine into Australia on a light aircraft.
The Australian Federal Police allege the Australian men, including a 72-year-old registered pilot, tried to import the "ice," with a street value of $255 million, from California.
On June 15, agents from the US Drug Enforcement Administration conducted a search warrant on a storage facility in Northern California.
They found 255 kilograms of the white crystalline substance, which tested positive to methamphetamine.
On Wednesday, police arrested a third Melbourne man, 58, allegedly connected to the drug importation.
This comes after a 72-year-old man was apprehended at Melbourne Airport on July 5 and police allege he was planning to fly the light aircraft back to Australia with the drugs.
All three men have been charged with the offence of conspiracy to import a commercial quantity of border controlled drugs.
