American savages Australia's daylight saving time zones: 'Makes me furious'

The podcaster was furious after discovering the five different time zones during Australia's daylight savings, but locals have jumped in to defend the system..

Americans discovering how Australian daylight saving time zones work have savagely ripped the country to shreds saying time zones Down Under "need to change".

US-based sports journalist and podcaster Jack Mac shared his "fury" online after looking at maps showing the different times in each state and territory. "Every time I’m reminded of how Australia does time zones, I get mad for no reason," he said. "The daylight saving portion of this graphic makes me furious."

Despite the frustration — as some Aussies have pointed out — most US states also participate in daylight savings.

American's fury at daylight saving time zones

"The daylight saving portion of this graphic makes me furious," Jack said. "Why is this 7.30pm in daylight savings but this is 8.30pm?" he continued while pointing at the Northern Territory and South Australia.

"And this part is just like 'we’re keeping it 6pm no matter what'," he said about Western Australia. "I’m never visiting Australia because of this. I just decided."

Responses flooded in from like-minded Americans "annoyed" with the Aussie map. "OMG I’m dying!! Now I’m annoyed with Australia's time zones. Do I have the time for this? No," one said.

"I work with Australians from NY and the timezones with daylight savings confuses and angers me," another said.

Aussies quickly came in to defend themselves against the onslaught though. "Australian here — can’t speak for SA and NT, but I do know that in NSW we have DLS to maximise the amount of daylight we have in summer," one explained. "Why can’t people just look up why we do this," another asked.

Aussie states and territories with daylight savings

In Australia, NSW, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, and the ACT, participate in daylight savings and Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT) kicked in at 2.00am on October 1, 2023 — making the clock jump forward to 3.00am.

Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia don't follow daylight savings, so their time does not change. During October to April, the Australian mainland experiences five different time zones.

When does daylight savings end in Australia this year?

The time adjustment is in place until 3am on April 7, 2024. On that day some Aussies will be turning their clocks back an hour — which means one extra hour of sleep for most.

Roughly a third of the world participates in a form of clock changing, though it varies by region — this includes most US states and Canada. In the US, states can choose whether they participate in daylight savings and as a result daylight saving time is observed across the country except in Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and most of Arizona.
