Air, land and sea search underway for missing Cape York fisherman

Cairns Water Police are coordinating an air, land and sea search for a 33-year-old man missing in waters off Portland Road, Cape York in Far North Queensland.

A police spokesman said it was believed that the man went spearfishing around 11am this morning.

The man’s tender was spotted on rocks at low tide in the vicinity of where he had entered the water.

Police were advised that the man was unaccounted for at around 3.50pm this afternoon. (Thursday)

Police from Lockhart River travelled to the isolated location and conducted inquiries with locals, as well as patrols of the shoreline and bushland at Portland Roads.

Weipa SES personnel will travel to the remote location tomorrow with a boat to conduct water searches.

A rescue helicopter conducted night time searches of the water and general vicinity however low cloud cover and poor visibility hampered search efforts.

An air, sea and land search will recommence tomorrow morning however forecast weather conditions are for strong winds and rough seas.
