Abandoned newborn found bleeding and covered in ants

A newborn baby boy has been found crying and covered in ants after being abandoned on a mountain in Indonesia.

The infant had a bloodied and bruised eye and was covered in soil when a man rescued him from Mount Salak in Aceh province on Saturday.

Passing locals initially thought the baby was a doll but "it was moving," Wiki Mahdiarsyah, 22, who rushed to help when he and his friends heard him cry, said.

"The baby was dirty and looked weak. The baby was only wearing a singlet shirt. The cloth that covers his body had come off while his nose and mouth were already covered with dust," Mr Mahdiarsyah said.

He removed the ants crawling on the boy and poured mineral water on his body before he and his friends rushed the baby to a health centre.

Medics at the Nisam Health Centre said the baby was estimated to be around 10 to 20 days old. He was generally healthy but was weak and hungry when they received him.

The bruise on his face was reportedly likely due to him falling onto the ground from one of the benches.

Police were also called to the scene to begin searching for the boy's parents. He will now be taken to social services while investigations are ongoing.
