Restaurant serving up 'exotic' tarantula burger

During the month of April one envelope-pushing microbrewery is spicing up its menu with a selection of unusual meats, including alligator, bison, camel, python, turtle, ostrich, and goat, to name a few.

But one animal in particular has raised a few eyebrows, as the Bull City Burger and Brewery in Durham, North Carolina celebrates Exotic Meat Month with its "Tarantula Challenge".

The $30 tarantula burger includes a pasture-raised North Carolina beef burger with gruyere cheese, topped with an oven-roasted tarantula and spicy chilli sauce.

The burger joint said its chefs do not actually cook the spider on site in the restaurant, but they are killed before cooking.

It's no surprise not everyone is keen to try the burger.

"Ew super gross," tweeted one person.

"Oh, hell no," added another.

The unusual menu item is so popular diners have to enter a ballot for a chance to try the creepy-crawly burger.

The only way to taste the eight-legged arachnid infusion is to enter the "Tarantula Raffle".

"You will be given a raffle ticket to keep and we will record your name and phone number on our raffle list," the restaurant specified on its website.

If the selected diner successfully eats the entire burger, they will receive a free Tarantula Challenge t-shirt. A bunch of customers have stepped up to the plate and succeeded.

"We've had 4 people conquer the Tarantula Challenge this year, so far. More to come! If tarantula isn't your thing... we've got camel too," Bull City Burger and Brewery tweeted.
