Aussie drug smuggler opens up on life in a Colombian prison

Cassie Sainsbury has opened up about her life inside her Colombian prison and revealed she has broken up with her boyfriend.

The convicted drug mule, 22, from Adelaide, told the Kyle and Jackie O show on Friday of the split with her fiancé Scott Broadbridge and that she has been subject to discrimination and violence since being sentenced to six years in jail following a plea deal.

"From the moment I got in here the relationship was doomed. I broke up with Scott because it was the best thing for me and the best thing for his future as well," she said on KIIS FM from her Colombian jail.

Sainsbury, who was caught with 5.8kg of cocaine while attempting to fly out of Bogota Airport in April 2017, also revealed she would have only made $4000 for transporting the drugs out of Colombia as she was forced to pay her expenses.

"What I was told was, the $10,000 [that she was to be paid], they would take out my flights, my accommodation, I would be paid what was left over," she said.

The news of her split comes as a shock to many as it was announced the pair would marry in 2018 at El Buen Pastor Prison.

Sainsbury said white inmates, known as "gringos", are targeted inside the prison, before referencing a violent altercation she had with an elderly prisoner.

"After that [being punched] I thought: 'nope I'm not getting involved with this old lady anymore', she was super strong for her age," she said.

Despite being targeted by other inmates, she said her living conditions were "a lot better than the conditions that are in the prison" despite being "not fabulous."

Sainsbury has since learnt Spanish during her time in prison, despite not being able to speak a word before, and she has made some friends inside her 'patio' cell she shares with around 20 others, News Corp reported.

Sainsbury is due to be released as early as 2020 depending on good behaviour approved by a Colombian judge.
