Crackdown on welfare recipients using drug, alcohol dependency excuse to avoid finding work

The Federal Government is cracking down on welfare recipients using drug and alcohol dependency as an excuse to avoid looking for work.

Anyone who fails to meet the government’s new compliance system for Newstart and Youth Allowance faces losing their payments.

The government will introduce a new demerit point system similar to the way a drivers' licence works.

When a job seeker fails to turn up for an obligation they accrue demerit points and face losing entitlements.

Social Services Minister Dan Tehan said there are around 80,000 welfare recipients who appear to be gaming the system and that taxpayers shouldn't have to foot the bill for their lifestyle.

Mr Tehan added those with genuine drug or alcohol problems do have the opportunity to seek treatment but those who just aren't turning up for appointments are on notice.

The crackdown starts this week.
