McDonald's runs out of popular breakfast item

McDonald's customers have been left hungry after Victorian stores ran out of hash browns and started serving fries instead.

The shortage was reported at multiple stores across the state on Thursday due to an issue with suppliers.

Customers said they were notified with sign stuck on the drive-thru boxes apologising for the inconvenience.

“Unfortunately we are unable to sell hash browns due to a product recall," one of the signs posted to Twitter read.

A McDonald's spokesperson said the shortage was a distribution issue.

“All affected restaurants will be restocked today," the spokesperson told the Herald Sun.

Customers shared some light-hearted tweets about the hash brown "crisis".

"The great hash brown crisis of March 2018," one user wrote.

'Perhaps the most disturbing part of the Great Victorian Hash Brown Crisis 2018 is the spelling and grammar. #mcdonalds #hashbrown," another user posted.
