Is it a shark or is it a dolphin? Photo baffling Gold Coast surfers

A Gold Coast woman's photo has confused people as to whether it is a shark or a dolphin catching the eye of a nearby surfer.

Kellie Wilson posted the snap of the surf at Froggys Beach, Duranbah on Instagram on Saturday.

The photo depicts a surfer looking over his shoulder at the silhouette of a large creature in the water behind him. It has a snout, two fins visible and a tail.

"Shark or dolphins? Or shark and dolphins? Or just a sharky looking dolphin?" Ms Wilson wrote in the caption.

People on the internet can't seem to come to an agreement on what the animal is.

One user said it's "unmistakably a shark" due to the side fins and its dark grey colour.

But another suggested it's a dolphin.

"The pectoral fins and dorsal fins are too far apart for it to be a shark and the tail looks like there is something caught in it or could be the water distortion," a user wrote.

James Cook University's Professor of Marine Biology Colin Simpfendorfer told Yahoo7 after "staring at the picture for a while" he's "pretty confident" it's a pod of dolphins and cited two reasons.

"Firstly, if you look in the top left corner there's another animal of about the same size," Professor Simpfendorfer said.

"Dolphins travel in pods while sharks move individually.

"And secondly, the fin positioning. The dorsal fin and the pectoral fin are too far apart."
